By default, ePublisher Express is set to always scan your source documents when you add them to your project. When ePublisher Express scans your documents, it is reading the style and formatting information, conditions, variables, and markers in your source documents.
If you do not want ePublisher Express to scan your documents automatically when they are added to your project, you can set how you would like your source documents handled. For example, you can choose to have ePublisher Express prompt you to scan the source documents, or you can choose to never have ePublisher Express scan the source documents. The scanning option that you choose will become the default selection for all existing and subsequent projects.

In ePublisher Express, you can add any source documents that can be opened with Microsoft Word or Adobe FrameMaker by using file mappings; for example, you can add .txt files to your project. In order to do this, you would need to specify the adapter for which ePublisher Express would need to use in order to open the .txt file. In ePublisher Express, an adapter refers to an application such as Adobe FrameMaker or Microsoft Word; it is the application that you will use to open the source documents. In your project, there is a File Mapping tab located under Edit > Preferences that will allow you to specify the adapter you would like to use for each file type.
By default, ePublisher Express comes with a list of file extensions that are preset to use either Microsoft Word, Adobe FrameMaker, or the built-in XML Adapter. You have the ability to choose either of these from the drop-down list of adapters for certain file types, such as .txt files, or create user-defined file mappings and specify the adapter for those file types. However, certain file extensions, such as .book, .fm, and .bk files, are unique to a specific adapter; in this case, .fm, .bk, and .book files can only be opened with Adobe FrameMaker. If a certain file type cannot normally be opened with either Microsoft Word, Adobe FrameMaker, or the XML Adapter then ePublisher Express will display an error message if you try to generate output or a preview with those files.
If you only have a license key for either the Word, FrameMaker, or XML adapter, then you can only use the adapter that is inline with your version of ePublisher Express. Although the option to choose either adapter may be available, you will not be able to generate a preview or output with the file if you do not have a corresponding license key for that adapter.
By default, ePublisher Express provides you with a default list of file mappings; each file extension has been preset to use a specific adapter. For file extensions that can either be opened with Microsoft Word or Adobe FrameMaker, such as .txt files, you can associate an adapter for the file extension.

If there is a file extension that you would like to use, but it is not available in the default list of file extensions, you can create a new file mapping. A file mapping refers to the file extension and its corresponding adapter; to create a file mapping, you basically add a new file extension and associate, or map, the file extension to an adapter. You can use this user-defined file mapping in order to specify whether the file will be opened with Microsoft Word, Adobe FrameMaker, or the XML Adapter. When you create a new file mapping, the mapping will be retained and applied for all your subsequent projects that you open; therefore, if you have specified that Microsoft Word will be the adapter for .txt files, then by default, each subsequent project that is opened will have .txt files mapped to Microsoft Word.
When you choose an adapter for a file extension, you need to verify that the file extension can be opened with the adapter outside of ePublisher Express. If the file type cannot be normally opened with the adapter, then ePublisher Express will not be able to process that document using the adapter. If you specify an adapter that is incompatible with the file type, then ePublisher Express will display an error. Depending on whether you are trying to generate output or generate a preview, ePublisher Express will display a different error if you are trying to perform one of these functions on an invalid file type.
